All replacement windows for domestic properties are now covered by building regulations and have to by law to comply with a new Government specification introduced in April 2002, known as "document L". Once windows have been installed a certificate of compliance will be issued which should be lodged with the house deeds. If you come to sell your property this certificate will be requested to show that the windows installed do comply with the new specification. Listed buildings are exempt from these rules. Windows now have to be double glazed and comply with a high level of thermal effeciency. Since October 2010 the *U* value was raised to 1.6 and all windows have to comply with this new rating.
